Pascack Valley Hospital. Not in Bergen’s best interests.

The Record — Letter to the Editor
Tuesday, July 28, 2009
BY ELENI DRESNER, PARK RIDGE

The Record has done an admirable job covering the issue of whether a hospital should open in the Pascack Valley. However, one fact that I believe has not gotten enough attention is the role that Legacy Hospital Partners would play if the hospital were to open. Who are they?

Legacy is a for-profit corporation based in Texas, far from Bergen County. As we have seen during this past year of economic turmoil, decisions at such companies are made to maximize profit and shareholder benefit at the expense of ordinary citizens. For these companies, accountability is rarely, if ever, to the community. In fact, it is usually communities like ours in the Pascack Valley that bear the burden of irresponsible corporate decisions.

I do not feel comfortable with a profit-seeking company providing health care to me and my Bergen County neighbors.
