HEALTH care in New Jersey is on an unsustainable trajectory. Costs are among the highest in the nation, yet quality is only average overall. That’s the finding of a recent study by the New Jersey-based Fannie E. Rippel Foundation, which I head.

The problem is being felt across the state, where local governments are under intense financial pressure from rising health care costs for employees. Private-sector employers feel the same pressure. (more…)

Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) delivered its application for certificate of need on June 1, the final day the state Department of Health and Senior Services would accept requests to open an acute-care hospital in Bergen County. (more…)

New Jersey officials have begun reviewing a plan that would open a new general acute-care hospital a few miles over the Rockland County border.

State health officials will examine the proposal by Hackensack University Medical Center and its partner, Legacy Hospital Partners, a private Texas company, to spend nearly $40 million to renovate the former Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood, N.J. The proposed hospital would provide 128 beds and could open by the end of next year. (more…)

Hackensack formally applies to reopen Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood

Hackensack University Medical Center formally applied for state permission Wednesday to reopen Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood as a 128-bed full-service community hospital. If approved, the for-profit hospital would open late next year.

The new plan aims to address the state’s looming physician shortage as well as provide patient care to the northeastern part of Bergen County, which has been underserved since Pascack closed due to bankruptcy in November 2007, said Robert C. Garrett, Hackensack’s president and chief executive officer. (more…)

PV Joint Venture, which includes Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) and LHP Hospital Group, Inc., filed a certificate of need application Wednesday with the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services to open a general acute care hospital on Old Hook Road in Westwood, the former site of Pascack Valley Hospital and the current home of an emergency room, HUMC North at Pascack Valley.
